Ghosts of the Galaxy - Atacama desert - Chile
Like ghost actors in an open-air theatre, the giant cactuses of the Atacama Desert stand under the sumptuous scenery of the Milky Way. At 3500m, in a very dry air, the vision of our Galaxy leaves us speechless. On the left, in Sagittarius, the galactic center is surmounted by the brilliant Jupiter. Note Saturn on the horizon, just above the Licancabur volcano (5916m). In the centre, the constellation of Centaurus, with its two bright stars, is accompanied at the very top of the image by Omega Century, a naked-eye globular cluster. Further to the right, the constellation Crux is next to Coalsack Nebula, the most prominent dark nebula in the skies. Finally, on the horizon between the two cacti, the Large Magellanic Cloud rises, a satellite galaxy on the Milky Way.
